Thornborough Henges
The Thornborough Henges complex has been said to be the most important prehistoric monument between Stonehenge and the Orkneys. Yet not many people know about them. They are a set of three enormous henges near Masham in North Yorkshire and form part of a more extensive set of prehistoric monuments stretching from Boroughbridge in the south to Catterick in the north, some 22 miles. The three henges of Thornborough Henges form an alignment that appears to reflect the three stars composing the belt of Orion, in that constellation. The big problem for Thornborough is Tarmc who are engaged in gravel quarrying all round this monument. The monument itself is protected but the surrounding prehistoric landscape is being destroyed leaving Thornborough as a major monument isolated with its context missing.
